Chapter 4 - WHAT NOAH SAW FROM THE STAIRS Noah had been seven.

Daniel didn't interrogate him.

Rebecca brought in a child-interview specialist.

They waited.

No pressure.

No threats.

No leading questions.

Finally, Noah spoke.

"I heard Aunt Claire yelling."

Daniel sat across the room.

His heart hammered.

"Where?"

"Downstairs."

Noah remembered Claire standing in the foyer.

Vanessa was there.

Marcus Hale was near the door.

Daniel had been in New York.

Claire was holding a USB drive.

Vanessa said:

"Give it to me."

Claire answered:

"Daniel sees everything tomorrow."

Then Marcus said something Noah never forgot.

"There won't be a tomorrow if you keep doing this."

Daniel felt his stomach turn.

Noah had hidden halfway up the stairs.

Claire looked toward him.

She saw him.

But she never said his name.

She only pressed one finger against her lips.

Quiet.

Then she hid the USB drive.

"Where?"

Noah frowned.

"Something red."

Daniel began searching his memory.

Claire had carried a black purse.

A beige coat.

Nothing red.

Then Noah pointed toward the hallway.

"The picture."

Daniel froze.

One family photograph had a dark-red frame.

Daniel and Claire as children.

Their father, Gregory, standing behind them.

Daniel removed it from the wall.

The backing felt loose.

He pulled it away.

A USB drive fell into his palm.

Thirteen months.

It had been sitting ten yards from where Daniel ate breakfast every morning.

Rebecca's technicians decrypted it using Claire's hint.

DANIEL, REMEMBER THE LAKE.

Lake Mercer.

The place where Gregory had taught them to swim.

Password:

MERCER1989.

The files opened.

Audits.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

Audio.

Marcus Hale had been siphoning millions through shell companies for four years.

Saint Gabriel was central to the scheme.

Fake medical invoices.

Nonexistent patients.

Fabricated treatments.

Then another name appeared.

Gregory Carter.

Their dead father.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Rebecca kept reading.

Claire's notes explained everything.

Gregory had discovered Marcus's theft years earlier.

Marcus had blackmailed him.

Then Rebecca opened an insurance document.

Claire Carter.

Fifty-million-dollar life insurance policy.

Beneficiary:

Carter Strategic Holdings.

Signed nine days before she disappeared.

Claire's signature looked perfect.

Daniel knew immediately it wasn't hers.

"Did they collect?"

Rebecca's silence answered first.

"Yes."

Eleven months earlier.

The money entered Carter Strategic.

Four hours later, almost all of it was redirected to Hale Medical Ventures.

Daniel sat down.

His sister's fake death had been profitable.

Then Rebecca opened the final audio file.

Claire's voice filled the room.

"Marcus, if anything happens to me, Daniel will find this."

Marcus answered:

"You don't understand what you've complicated."

"I understand perfectly."

Then Vanessa:

"Claire, give us the drive."

A struggle.

A door slamming.

Claire screaming.

Then silence.

Daniel stared at Noah.

His son had heard part of that night.

But the anonymous messenger knew Noah had seen it.

That meant one thing.

There had been another witness.

Someone Claire didn't know.

Someone Marcus didn't silence.

May you like

Someone who had watched for thirteen months...

and finally decided to speak.
