Chapter 6 - THE SECOND DISAPPEARANCE Marcus vanished.

His house was empty.

His office cleared.

His car abandoned beside a private airfield.

Daniel wanted to join the search.

Rebecca refused.

"You have two children who just watched their home become a crime scene."

That stopped him.

For years, Daniel had responded to every crisis by running toward it.

Now fatherhood required something harder.

Staying.

Noah asked:

"Is Aunt Claire alive?"

"We think so."

"Then why doesn't she come home?"

Daniel crouched in front of him.

"Because somebody is stopping her."

Noah clenched his fists.

"I should have told you sooner."

"No."

Daniel took his shoulders.

"You were seven."

"But I saw."

"And now you told us. That's enough."

Vanessa requested a meeting.

Daniel initially refused.

Then her attorney delivered one message.

I KNOW MARCUS'S ROUTE.

Daniel joined the video call.

Vanessa looked smaller in jail clothes.

No makeup.

No elegant mask.

"Where?"

"Vermont. He owns a house near a lake."

Federal agents raided it.

Marcus was gone.

But Claire had been there hours earlier.

DNA confirmed hair found on a pillow.

A hidden camera contained recordings.

Claire sat in a chair.

Weak.

But awake.

Marcus stood over her with legal documents.

"Sign."

"No."

"Daniel thinks you're dead."

Claire looked at him.

"Then why do you need my signature?"

Marcus slammed his fist onto the table.

A family trust gave Daniel and Claire joint control over forty percent of Carter holdings.

Marcus had stolen money.

Faked identities.

Declared Claire dead.

But the trust had not fully transferred.

To complete the takeover, he needed Claire alive long enough to sign.

She refused.

Then Vanessa revealed another betrayal.

Her relationship with Daniel had been planned.

Marcus had arranged their first meeting.

The charity dinner.

The conveniently empty chair beside Daniel.

The perfectly timed conversation.

Everything.

"I did fall in love with you," Vanessa whispered.

Daniel stared at her.

"Don't call what you did love."

She began crying.

Then the truth about Lily emerged.

Vanessa wasn't Lily's biological mother.

Emma—Daniel's first wife—had died during Lily's birth.

Vanessa entered Daniel's life afterward.

Daniel had been grieving.

Exhausted.

Alone with Noah and a newborn.

Vanessa made herself indispensable.

Lily eventually called her "Mom."

Daniel suddenly saw the pattern.

Vanessa had occupied every empty space.

Emma's.

Claire's.

Even Daniel's own judgment.

Then Rebecca interrupted.

Canadian police had located Marcus's vehicle.

Blood was found in the back seat.

Claire's partial fingerprint was on the door.

And inside a broken phone, technicians found an unfinished message addressed to Daniel.

I'M ALIVE. DON'T BELIEVE—

Nothing else.

Daniel stared at those words.

Don't believe what?

May you like

Then the recovered memory fragments arrived.

The rest of Claire's message changed everything.
