Chapter 2 - MESSAGES FROM A DEAD WOMAN The police arrived before Vanessa could leave.

Daniel stood between her and the children.
He didn't threaten her.
He didn't need to.
Two officers photographed the broken lamp and recovered the whip.
A paramedic examined Lily.
Noah refused to release his sister's hand.
The detective assigned to the case arrived twenty minutes later.
Rebecca Shaw.
Forty-six.
Short black hair.
Gray coat.
A voice so calm it made people nervous.
She studied Claire's death certificate for nearly a minute.
"Where did you find this?"
"My study."
"Had you ever seen it before?"
"No."
"Who had access?"
Daniel looked across the room.
Vanessa sat beside an attorney who had arrived suspiciously fast.
"She did."
Rebecca followed his gaze.
"And Claire Carter was your sister?"
"Is."
Rebecca paused.
Daniel corrected himself.
"Was. I don't know anymore."
"When did you last see her?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
Thirteen months earlier.
Claire had entered his office after midnight.
She looked exhausted.
Angry.
Terrified.
She dropped financial documents onto his desk.
"Something is wrong with Hale Medical Ventures."
Daniel had barely looked at them.
He had spent sixteen hours negotiating an acquisition.
He was exhausted.
"Claire, can this wait?"
"No."
"Everything is an emergency with you."
"Because nobody else is paying attention."
They argued.
Their last argument.
Claire's last words before leaving had been:
"One day you're going to learn that trusting the wrong people costs more than losing money."
The following morning, she disappeared.
Two days later, an email arrived.
I need to leave.
Don't look for me.
Rebecca listened.
"Did you ever speak to her by phone?"
"No."
"Video?"
"No."
"Voice message?"
Daniel shook his head.
Only text.
Only email.
Rebecca asked for Daniel's phone.
Hours later, the digital team produced the first results.
Three messages had passed through VPN servers.
Two through commercial relay services.
The most recent message originated locally.
Daniel stared at Rebecca.
"Locally where?"
She answered:
"Here."
His stomach tightened.
"How close?"
"Less than seven miles from this house."
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
She was being escorted toward a police vehicle.
Her lawyer protested.
Rebecca ignored him.
"The death certificate has a registration number," she continued. "We checked the state database."
Daniel held his breath.
"It doesn't exist."
For half a second, relief hit him.
Claire might be alive.
Then Rebecca added:
"But Marcus Hale's signature appears authentic."
Daniel felt the relief disappear.
Rebecca's team traced Vanessa's phone call.
The number belonged to a shell company.
But it communicated repeatedly with another device.
A corporate phone.
Registered to Carter Strategic Holdings.
Assigned to its interim chief executive.
Daniel Carter.
Daniel stared at her.
"I only have one phone."
"I know."
Someone had created another Daniel Carter.
A digital version of him.
One capable of signing documents.
Moving money.
Communicating with Vanessa.
Rebecca looked toward the study.
"If someone has been impersonating Claire..."
Then she looked at Daniel.
"...and someone has been impersonating you..."
Daniel understood.
This wasn't simply about his sister.
It wasn't simply about Vanessa.

Someone had spent thirteen months quietly building an entire world of false identities around the Carter family.
And Daniel had been living inside it without knowing.
