Then she displayed the fake death certificate.
"This document said I was dead."
Silence.
Claire looked across the room.
"I wasn't."

"This one said I didn't know who I was."
She paused.
"I knew enough to keep trying to come home."
A student later asked:
"How did you forgive the system?"
Claire smiled slightly.
"I didn't."
The room went still.
"I helped change what I could."
Afterward, Daniel called.
"You're famous."
"Shut up."
"I watched the stream."
"Traitor."
She smiled.
Claire gave two more lectures.
Then stopped.
Rachel understood.
"Your story is a resource. It isn't an obligation."
Exactly.
Daniel also began speaking about corporate governance.
He admitted his failures.
Too much trust.
Too little verification.
Too much inherited authority.
Carter Strategic eventually merged and removed the Carter name entirely.

Daniel found it strange.
Claire loved it.
"Less family worship."
Then one day, Claire received an email.
From Vanessa.
One sentence.
The worst thing I did wasn't believing Marcus. It was continuing to obey him after I knew he was lying.
Claire read it.
Closed the laptop.
Never answered.
Forgiveness wasn't required for the statement to be true.
Then another old place resurfaced.

The facility where Claire had been imprisoned as Caroline Mason.
It was about to be demolished.
Rachel asked:
"Do you want to see it?"
Claire stared through the window.
