Chapter 1 - The Room Where Everything Changed David had always believed that home was supposed to be the one place where fear could never enter.

Their little suburban house wasn't luxurious. It didn't need to be.
It had white walls, hardwood floors that creaked in winter, a narrow kitchen where Leah liked to make coffee before sunrise, and a backyard barely large enough for a swing set.
But to David, it had always been enough.
Especially the nursery.
He had spent three weekends assembling the crib.
Leah had laughed at him when he checked the screws for the fourth time.
"You know the baby isn't going to inspect your construction skills, right?"
David had smiled.
"I want her first bed to be perfect."
They had spent years waiting for that baby.
Then, one terrible evening, everything changed.
David came home to shouting.
He ran through the front door and heard Leah crying from upstairs.
When he reached the nursery, his mother was standing over his pregnant wife.
Leah was on the floor, terrified, one arm wrapped around her stomach.
For a few seconds, David couldn't understand what he was seeing.
Then he saw his mother's hands.
He stepped between them.
"Get away from my wife."
His mother looked at him with an expression he had never seen before.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Possession.
"You don't understand what I'm trying to protect."
"You're hurting her!"
"No," she whispered. "I'm trying to save you."
David called the police.
That night, his mother was removed from the house.
But long after the police car disappeared, David stood in the nursery staring at the empty doorway.
Leah sat on the floor, shaking.

Neither of them knew that what had happened wasn't the beginning of their nightmare.
It was the first crack in a secret that had been buried for more than twenty years.
