Chapter 4 - Detective Miller's Question Detective Miller had seen obsession before.

He had seen spouses who couldn't let go.

Parents who crossed boundaries.

People who mistook possession for love.

But David's case bothered him.

The evidence was beginning to form a pattern.

Repeated calls.

Unwanted visits.

Suspicious substances.

Threatening messages.

The hospital records.

And now the package.

Miller spread photographs across his desk.

"Tell me about Emily."

David froze.

"How do you know that name?"

"Your aunt mentioned her."

David stared at the detective.

"My aunt?"

Miller nodded.

"She says Emily was your mother's first child."

David felt something cold move through him.

"She died?"

"Yes."

"How?"

Miller paused.

"That's what you need to find out."

David went home that evening with one question burning inside him.

What had happened to Emily?

And why did his mother seem terrified of his unborn daughter?

He didn't sleep.

At 3:12 in the morning, David woke suddenly.

Leah was sitting upright beside him.

"What's wrong?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

David looked toward the hallway.

The house was silent.

Then he heard something.

May you like

Three soft knocks.

From inside the house.
