Chapter 11 - You're Mine His mother lunged.

David grabbed her wrist.
They crashed against the laundry cart.
The weapon fell.
Officers tackled her to the floor.
She screamed.
"David!"
He froze.
She looked up at him.
"You're mine!"
For most of his life, those words had controlled him.
Not anymore.
He looked at her.
Then toward the operating room.
"I'm not yours."
Her face collapsed.
"I gave you everything."
"No."
His voice trembled.
"You gave me fear."
She began crying.
"You don't understand."
"I understand enough."
She reached for him.
"She's stealing you."
David shook his head.
"No."
He swallowed.
"I chose them."
The officers pulled her away.
She screamed his name until the elevator doors closed.
David stood motionless.
Then the red light above the operating room turned off.
The doors opened.
A nurse appeared.
She was holding a tiny bundle.
For one second, there was silence.
Then the baby cried.
Loud.
Angry.
Alive.
May you like
David covered his mouth.
He had never heard anything more beautiful.
