Chapter 10 - The Red Hallway Leah was rushed into the emergency department.
Doctors moved quickly.
"Placental abruption."
The words terrified David.
"Is my baby okay?"
The doctor didn't answer immediately.
"We need an emergency C-section."
Leah grabbed David's hand.
"Don't let her in."
"I won't."
"Promise me."
"I promise."
The operating room doors closed.
David stood alone in the hallway.
His clothes were soaked.
His hands were stained with Leah's blood.
Then the elevator doors opened.
A woman in blue surgical clothing pushed a laundry cart into the hallway.
Nobody paid attention.
Except David.
He knew that walk.
He knew those shoulders.
He knew that stare.
"Mom."
The woman stopped.
Slowly, she turned.
Her face was bruised from the crash.
But her eyes were clear.
"You shouldn't have followed us."
She smiled.
"I'm not leaving without my family."
David stepped between her and the operating room.
"You lost the right to call us that."
Her expression changed.
Then her hand disappeared beneath the surgical gown.
David saw metal.
