Chapter 19 - The Door That night, after Maya fell asleep, David stood at the front door.

He checked the lock.
Once.
His hand moved toward it again.

"You checked it?"
"Once."
She laughed.

David looked around.
The house was quiet.
Safe.
Warm.
Alive.
He no longer needed to check every window.
He no longer listened for footsteps.
He no longer jumped whenever a car slowed outside.
He had spent months learning that safety wasn't the absence of danger.
It was the return of trust.

Trust in Leah.
Trust in the life they had built.
David turned off the porch light.
"Come on."
Leah took his hand.
They walked upstairs together.
