Chapter 8 - Thirty-Eight Weeks At thirty-eight weeks and two days, the storm arrived.

Rain battered the windows.

Thunder shook the house.

At 2:17 a.m., Leah grabbed David's arm.

"David."

He woke instantly.

"My water broke."

Then he saw the blood.

Everything inside him stopped.

He grabbed the hospital bag.

Leah struggled to stand.

Another contraction hit.

She cried out.

David helped her into the car.

The storm made the streets almost impossible to see.

As they pulled away from the house, David checked the rearview mirror.

Headlights.

A dark sedan.

His heart sank.

The sedan followed.

Leah saw it too.

"Is that—"

"Yes."

His mother.

David called 911.

The dispatcher instructed him to keep driving toward the hospital.

The sedan stayed behind them.

Closer.

Closer.

Then it accelerated.

David pressed the gas.

His hands were shaking.

But his mind was suddenly clear.

For years, he had been a son.

Tonight, he was a father.

And he finally understood what that meant.
