Chapter 15 - A Thousand Miles Away Six months later, they moved.

A thousand miles separated them from the old neighborhood.

Their new home was brighter.

Quieter.

There were wide windows and a small backyard.

The nursery overlooked a garden.

Maya was six months old.

She had discovered laughter.

David could make her laugh simply by pretending to sneeze.

Leah watched them from the kitchen.

"You two are ridiculous."

David grinned.

"You married us."

Leah laughed.

For the first time, ordinary things felt extraordinary.

Morning coffee.

Laundry.

Baby toys.

Grocery shopping.

Falling asleep on the couch.

One night, Leah stood at the bedroom window.

"Do you ever think about what happened?"

David looked at Maya sleeping nearby.

"Sometimes."

"Does it still scare you?"

He considered the question.

"Less."

Leah turned.

"Why?"

David smiled.

"Because now when I look around, I don't see the house where everything happened."

He looked at her.

"I see the house where we survived."
