Chapter 9 - The Highway Rain turned the highway into a sheet of black glass.
Leah cried out.
"David!"
"I'm here."
"I'm scared."
"So am I."
He looked at her.
"But I'm not stopping."
The sedan pulled alongside them.
Lightning flashed.
His mother's face appeared behind the wheel.
She looked strangely calm.
She mouthed something through the glass.
David couldn't hear her.
Then she smiled.
The sedan swerved toward them.
David slammed the brakes.
The car behind them lost traction.
It spun across the highway and crashed into a muddy embankment.
David kept driving.
Leah was bleeding.
Their baby was coming.
He couldn't risk stopping.
A few minutes later, police vehicles appeared behind them.
David finally allowed himself to breathe.
But the relief lasted less than thirty seconds.
The dispatcher called.
"Sir, the suspect has left her vehicle."
David looked at the hospital ahead.
His blood turned cold.
She wasn't following them anymore.
