Chapter 11 - THE CONFRONTATION Carlo finally agreed to talk.

He was brought into a federal interview room.
No mansion.
No bodyguards.
No expensive suit.
Just a gray table, two chairs, and fluorescent lights.
Mateo sat across from him.
Carlo looked older.
“You always hated me,” Carlo said.
Mateo shook his head.
“I trusted you.”
“That was worse.”
Carlo looked down.
“You were always Father's favorite.”
“This isn't about Father.”
“Yes, it is.”
Carlo laughed bitterly.
“You inherited everything without fighting for it.”
Mateo's expression hardened.
“You stole money because you felt entitled?”
“I borrowed it.”
“You forged authority.”
“I protected my business.”
“You used Clara's exhaustion against her.”
Carlo fell silent.
Then he said:
“I knew she was capable.”
Mateo froze.
“What?”
“I knew she wasn't unstable.”
“Then why?”
Carlo looked away.
“Because stable Clara wouldn't sign.”
The confession destroyed the last excuse.
Mateo leaned back.
“What did my mother promise you?”
Carlo shook his head.
“She didn't promise me anything.”
“Then why did she do it?”
“Because she believed I was the only person who could keep the family powerful.”
Mateo stared at him.
“And you believed her.”
Carlo's voice cracked.
“Yes.”
For the first time, Mateo didn't see a monster.

He saw a man who had spent his entire life believing power was proof of worth.
And that made what he had done no less unforgivable.
