Chapter 5 - THE ORIGINAL WILL The hidden trust was registered under a dead attorney's name.
It had been dormant for twenty-one years.
Until three months before Luca's birth.
That detail changed everything.
Rebecca, the family's independent legal investigator, arrived at the safe house with boxes of documents.
She spread them across the kitchen table.
“The original inheritance agreement wasn't simply destroyed,” she said.
Clara leaned forward.
“What happened?”
“Eleanor created a replacement.”
Mateo stared at her.
“A fake will?”
“Not exactly.”
Rebecca pointed to several clauses.
“She altered the succession structure. She didn't completely rewrite ownership. She created layers of control.”
Mateo's face hardened.
“Why?”
“To make it appear that she had authority over assets she didn't legally own.”
Clara looked at the documents.
“And Luca?”
Rebecca nodded.
“That was the problem.”
Mateo understood.
The moment Luca was born, the succession structure changed.
The baby didn't need to take control.
His existence alone triggered legal protections.
Clara whispered:
“So she needed me out of the way.”
“Yes.”
“And Mateo?”
Rebecca looked at him.
“You needed to be temporarily incapacitated, absent, or convinced that your mother had the situation under control.”
Mateo sat back.
Suddenly every conversation from the previous year felt different.
Every dinner.
Every suggestion.
Every time Eleanor had told him Clara was unstable.
Rebecca continued.
“She also created a council resolution granting Julian emergency authority.”
Mateo's eyes narrowed.
“How much?”
“Enough to refinance, renew guarantees, move reserves, and restructure certain family assets.”
Clara looked at Mateo.
“So if Mateo disappeared…”
“Julian could operate the empire.”
Mateo stared at the documents.
His mother's plan wasn't emotional.
