Chapter 2 - THE ASHES OF BETRAYAL “You held my son over a fire!”

Mateo’s voice tore across the courtyard like a gunshot.

For one suspended second, nobody moved.

The mansion’s golden string lights continued glowing above them. Somewhere beyond the shattered pergola, a string quartet had stopped playing, leaving only the crackle of the fire pit and the distant hum of expensive cars idling near the gates.

Julian lay beneath the broken wooden beams, blood staining the collar of his designer suit.

Clara stood several feet away, clutching baby Luca against her chest.

Her hands would not stop shaking.

She had grabbed her son the instant Mateo attacked Julian. Luca was crying softly now, his tiny fingers curled into the blanket, completely unaware that his life had nearly ended beside a decorative flame.

Mateo looked at him.

Then he looked at Clara.

Then his eyes returned to Julian.

Something inside him went cold.

Not angry.

Not anymore.

Cold.

“You held my infant son over an open fire,” Mateo said quietly.

Julian coughed and laughed.

“It was a demonstration.”

Clara stared at him in disbelief.

“A demonstration?”

Eleanor stepped forward.

Her champagne-colored gown shimmered beneath the lights, but the elegance of the fabric could not hide the panic beginning to fracture her face.

“You are overreacting, Mateo.”

He slowly turned toward his mother.

“You ordered this?”

Eleanor’s lips tightened.

“I protected this family.”

“No.”

Mateo shook his head.

“You protected yourself.”

Julian struggled upright.

“She was digging through the family archives,” he snarled. “She found documents that were never supposed to be found.”

Clara swallowed.

Her fear was still there, but something stronger was rising beneath it.

Defiance.

“I found the original inheritance will.”

The courtyard went silent.

Eleanor’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But Mateo saw it.

The tiny widening of her eyes.

The sudden tension in her jaw.

Clara continued.

“The original will proves that this estate and several of the family’s largest assets were never legally transferred to Eleanor.”

Julian’s expression hardened.

“You don't know what you're talking about.”

“I know exactly what I'm talking about.”

Clara reached into her coat and pulled out a small encrypted drive.

“I also found offshore accounts. Bribery records. Payments to lawyers. Judges. Shell companies.”

Eleanor stared at the drive as though it were a loaded weapon.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

Eleanor’s voice sharpened.

“Clara, you have no idea what you're doing.”

“Oh, I do.”

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

“I know what you did to my husband before I ever met him. I know what you did to his father. And now I know what you were willing to do to my son.”

Mateo stepped beside her.

“You're finished.”

Eleanor's composure finally shattered.

“After everything I built?”

“You didn't build it.”

Mateo stared directly into her eyes.

“You stole it.”

The distant sirens grew louder.

Eleanor looked toward the gates.

Then back at Mateo.

“You wouldn't destroy your own mother.”

Mateo felt something inside his chest break.

“She stopped being my mother the moment she decided Luca was expendable.”

The gates exploded inward.

Black federal vehicles flooded the driveway.

Armed agents stormed the courtyard.

Private guards dropped their weapons.

Julian was restrained before he could rise.

Eleanor stood frozen beneath the flashing red and blue lights.

Mateo wrapped one arm around Clara.

His other hand protected Luca.

For the first time in years, he did not feel like the heir to an empire.

He felt like a father.

And that was enough.

As the family’s mansion disappeared behind them, Mateo looked once more at the burning fire pit.

The flames danced against the darkness.

Tonight, something had burned.

May you like

But it wasn't his son.

It was the old life.
