Chapter 16 - THE LESSON OF THE TRUST When Luca was seven, the family nearly faced another conflict.
A company wanted to lease a warehouse connected to the family trust.
Mateo thought the deal was reasonable.
The independent trustee disagreed.
“There will be competitive bidding.”
Mateo frowned.
“We've already reviewed the company.”
“That doesn't matter.”
“I am the majority beneficiary's father.”
“And I am the trustee.”
The old Mateo would have demanded compliance.
Instead, he stopped.
He remembered the documents.
The false agreement.
The emergency council resolution.
The dangerous belief that family authority should override structure.
He took a breath.
“Fine.”
Clara looked at him.
“You're okay?”
Mateo smiled.
“I'm learning.”
The competitive process produced a better offer.
Another company won.
The family made more money.
And nobody had to threaten anyone.
That night, Mateo told Clara:
“Your mother-in-law nearly destroyed us because she believed systems were obstacles.”
Clara corrected him.
“She believed people were obstacles.”
Mateo thought about that.
Then nodded.
“Maybe that's what I used to believe too.”
