Mateo watched everything unfold from a secure laptop.
Every headline felt surreal.
RINALDI EMPIRE COLLAPSES AFTER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.
FAMILY MATRIARCH ARRESTED.
FINANCIAL FRAUD REVEALS DECADES OF CORRUPTION.
But one headline made Mateo stop breathing.
INFANT NEAR-FATALITY LINKED TO FAMILY POWER STRUGGLE.
He closed the computer.
Clara saw him.
“You're blaming yourself.”
“I should have known.”
“You didn't know.”
“I knew my mother was ruthless.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
Mateo looked at her.
“I saw you struggling.”
Clara's eyes lowered.
“I told you something was wrong.”
“I know.”
“You told me I was exhausted.”
Mateo swallowed.
“I was wrong.”
The silence between them was painful.
Clara had wanted those words for months.
But hearing them did not magically repair everything.
“You don't get to fix this by saying you're sorry,” she whispered.
“I know.”
“You need to learn how to listen.”
Mateo nodded.
“I will.”
She looked at him carefully.
“That's what scares me.”
“What?”
“That you mean it.”
Mateo almost smiled.
Then his phone rang.
Agent Harris.
Mateo answered.
“Tell me.”
Harris's voice was serious.
“There's a problem.”
Mateo stood.
“What kind?”
“We found another financial structure.”
“What structure?”
“A hidden trust.”
Mateo's blood ran cold.
“Whose?”
“Your mother's.”
“And what's inside?”
