Chapter 19 - THE TRUTH LUCA DESERVED At thirteen, Luca finally asked about the past.

He had found an old photograph.
The courtyard.
The mansion.
The fire pit.
And his father holding him.
“Was that the night everyone disappeared?”
Mateo went silent.
Clara sat beside Luca.
They didn't lie.
But they didn't tell him everything either.
They told him the truth he was old enough to understand.
“Someone in our family made dangerous choices,” Mateo said.
“Why?”
“Because they believed power mattered more than people.”
Luca studied the photograph.
“Did they hurt me?”
Clara answered gently.
“Yes.”
Luca looked at Mateo.
“Did you save me?”
Mateo nodded.
“Then why do you look sad?”
Mateo's throat tightened.
“Because I should have protected your mother sooner.”
Luca thought about that.
Then he asked:
“Was Grandma evil?”
Clara and Mateo exchanged a glance.
Mateo shook his head.
“She did terrible things.”
“Does that mean she was terrible?”
“I don't know.”
Luca frowned.
Mateo continued.
“People can make terrible choices. That doesn't mean we understand every part of them.”
Luca looked back at the photograph.
“Do you forgive her?”
Mateo took a long breath.
“I forgive myself for surviving her.”
Clara reached for his hand.
Luca quietly placed his own hand over theirs.
The three of them sat together.
The photograph remained on the table.

But it no longer felt like a weapon.
It was simply history.
