Chapter 17 - LUCA'S FIRST FEAR At nine, Luca came home with a torn backpack.

His face was furious.
Clara immediately assumed someone had bullied him.
Mateo almost did too.
But he stopped himself.
“Tell us what happened.”
Luca crossed his arms.
“I don't want to talk about it.”
Clara looked worried.
Mateo remained calm.
“We're listening.”
Finally, Luca confessed.
He had torn the backpack himself.
During a robotics competition.
He had become frustrated when his machine failed.
Then he had thrown the bag.
Clara stared at him.
“You did this?”
Luca nodded.
Mateo almost laughed.
Instead, he asked:
“Why didn't you tell us?”
“Because I thought you'd be angry.”
Mateo looked at Clara.
She looked back.
This was the moment.
The old family would have demanded obedience.
The new family needed honesty.
Mateo sat beside Luca.
“Making a mistake isn't the same as being a bad person.”
Luca looked at him.
“Really?”
“Really.”
Clara smiled.
“But you are fixing the backpack.”
Luca groaned.
“Okay.”
They laughed.
Later that night, Mateo realized something profound.

Trust wasn't created by always being right.
It was created when people could admit they were wrong and still remain safe.
