Chapter 15 - THE COURTYARD Years later, they returned to the estate.

Not to reclaim it.
To walk away from it.
The property had been sold.
The new owners had renovated the courtyard.
The fire pit was gone.
In its place stood a large stone planter filled with rosemary.
Luca, now a curious toddler, ran through the grass.
Mateo stopped.
He stared at the planter.
Clara stood beside him.
“You okay?”
He nodded.
“I'm surprised.”
“By what?”
“How small it looks.”
She understood.
Trauma had made that courtyard enormous in his memory.
But standing there years later, it looked different.
Just stone.
Grass.
Trees.
A place.
Not a prison.
Luca ran back toward them.
“Daddy!”
Mateo crouched and caught him.
Clara watched them.
The past remained.
But it no longer controlled the present.
Mateo kissed Luca's forehead.
“Come on, buddy.”
Luca pointed at the rosemary.
“What's that?”
“Rosemary.”
“What does it mean?”
Clara smiled.
“It means remembering.”
Luca thought about it.
Then he grabbed Mateo's hand.
“Let's go.”
Mateo looked at Clara.
May you like
She nodded.
And they left the courtyard together.
