Chapter 12 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE The legal consequences came quickly.

Carlo resigned from every Rinaldi position.
The Milwaukee project entered court-supervised restructuring.
Lakecrest seized control of the development.
Investigators recovered much of the diverted money.
Eleanor faced charges involving financial fraud, bribery, conspiracy, and the coercive scheme involving Clara and Luca.
Julian survived his injuries.
He did not escape prosecution.
The mansion was seized.
The gates were removed.
The marble halls became evidence rooms.
The family name that once opened doors now triggered subpoenas.
Mateo watched from a distance.
He could have intervened.
He could have called judges.
Lawyers.
Politicians.
Old allies.
But he didn't.
For the first time, he understood that justice wasn't something he could personally administer.
He had spent his whole life believing power meant having the ability to make things happen.
Now he was learning that sometimes power meant refusing to interfere.
Clara watched him grow quieter.
One evening, she found him outside the cabin.
Snow was falling.
“You're thinking about them.”
“Yes.”
“Do you miss them?”
Mateo considered the question.
“I miss who I thought they were.”
Clara sat beside him.
“That might be harder.”
“It is.”
She took his hand.
They sat beneath the falling snow.
Neither promised forgiveness.
Neither promised that everything would be perfect.
But they were still together.
