Chapter 15 - The Dinner Party Trap

Believing she had the upper hand, Evelyn decided to host a lavish dinner party at the estate that Friday. She claimed it was to celebrate Garrett’s continued recovery, but I knew the real agenda. She had invited Atlanta’s most elite socialites, including several wealthy friends of my ex-husband, to publicly humiliate me and solidify her role as the true ruler of the house.

I spent the afternoon helping Garrett dress in a tailored charcoal suit. He stood tall and perfectly healthy, but as soon as we left our private quarters, he slumped slightly and leaned heavily on his cane, playing the role of the weakened heir to perfection.

I wore a breathtaking, deep emerald gown that Garrett had ordered specifically for this night. It was elegant, powerful, and screamed old money. I walked confidently into the grand dining room, my head held high, ignoring the condescending whispers of Evelyn's high-society guests.

Florence was practically vibrating with malicious joy. She was dressed as a servant, but she moved around the room whispering toxic rumors into the ears of the wealthiest guests. I could hear snippets of her venom—calling me a former maid, a divorced failure, a leech draining Garrett’s fortune.

When dinner was served, Evelyn stood at the head of the long mahogany table and tapped her crystal glass. She gave a sickeningly sweet speech about family resilience, subtly implying that Garrett was too weak to manage his own affairs and praising herself for stepping in to save the legacy.

Then, one of Christopher’s old banking friends, a man named Sterling, turned to me with a cruel smirk. He loudly asked how a woman with absolutely no corporate background was managing to act as the Chief of Operations, suggesting I was only in the position because I shared the boss’s bed.

The entire table fell completely silent, waiting to see if I would break down in tears and run from the room like the fragile victim they expected.

Instead, I took a slow, elegant sip of my wine. I locked eyes with Sterling and, in a clear, commanding voice, recited the exact profit margins, quarterly projections, and offshore tax loopholes that his specific banking firm was currently exploiting. I casually mentioned that as Chief of Operations, I was considering pulling the Corbin empire’s massive accounts from his bank due to his firm's recent, highly publicized SEC violations.

Sterling’s arrogant smirk vanished instantly, replaced by sheer panic as the other guests began whispering about his failing bank.

I turned my gaze to Evelyn and Florence, my expression perfectly serene. I loudly thanked Evelyn for the dinner, noting that it was a lovely farewell party, as major structural changes to the estate were happening come Monday.

Garrett, dropping his fake weakness entirely, sat up straight and firmly grasped my hand on top of the table. He announced to the stunned room that I was not just his Chief of Operations, but the most brilliant woman he had ever met, and his equal in every way.

Evelyn’s face turned bright red with fury. The trap was springing, and she could feel the steel jaws closing in.
