Chapter 5 - The Ghost of Betrayal

Christopher stared at me in total shock, his jaw dropping as he recognized his ex-wife standing in the dark office.
He was wearing an expensive suit, looking just as arrogant and polished as the day I divorced him.
My blood ran cold as I remembered that Christopher worked for ApexBio Solutions.
ApexBio was the exact rival corporation that Douglas was secretly selling Garrett's company to.
Christopher quickly recovered from his shock and let out a cruel, mocking laugh.
He asked what a pathetic, divorced maid was doing sneaking around a billionaire's home office in the middle of the night.
I refused to let him intimidate me and tried to push past him into the hallway.
He grabbed my arm violently, his fingers digging into my skin just like they used to when he was angry.
He leaned in close, smelling of expensive bourbon, and whispered that he was the lead negotiator for this massive corporate buyout.
Christopher realized that if I was snooping in Douglas's safe, I must know about the illegal aspects of the deal.
He threatened to call the police right now and frame me for stealing from my wealthy employers.
He said I would spend the next ten years in prison while he became a millionaire from the merger.
I panicked, driving the heel of my shoe fiercely into his instep.
Christopher cursed and let go of my arm, stumbling backward against the heavy oak desk.
I sprinted out of the office, running blindly up the stairs while he shouted threats behind me.
I burst into Garrett's room, locking the door and sliding the forged documents onto his lap.
I was hyperventilating as I told Garrett that the man negotiating the corrupt deal was my abusive ex-husband.
Garrett’s eyes darkened with a terrifying, protective fury I had never seen before.
He carefully reviewed the forged medical proxy, confirming it was exactly what we needed to destroy Douglas completely.
Garrett looked up at me and promised that Christopher was going to lose absolutely everything he cared about.
He asked me to help him stand up again, completely determined to walk into that boardroom tomorrow.

Suddenly, the power to the entire house was completely shut off, plunging the bedroom into total blackness.
Through the heavy oak door, we heard the unmistakable sound of a heavy metal padlock being latched onto our side of the hallway.
