Chapter 18 - The Counterstrike

The police dragged a screaming, cursing Florence out of the mansion, charging her with the attempted murder of Evelyn Corbin. As the flashing red and blue lights faded down the long driveway, an eerie silence settled over the estate.
Garrett and I didn't celebrate. We knew the war wasn't over. Evelyn had likely instructed Florence to poison her just enough to make it look convincing, willing to risk her own life to see me locked in a prison cell.
The next morning, Garrett and I drove to the private VIP wing of Atlanta General Hospital. We had already spoken to the doctors; Evelyn’s stomach had been pumped, and she was perfectly awake, though weak and furious that her plan had failed.
We walked into her lavish hospital room. Evelyn looked up from her pillows, her eyes narrowing with pure hatred when she saw me standing tall and completely free. She demanded to know why I wasn't in jail.
Garrett pulled up a chair beside her bed. He didn't yell. He didn't express anger. He simply pulled a thick stack of printed photographs from his jacket and dropped them onto her lap. They were the photos I had taken of the secret ledger and the decade-old letters.
Evelyn’s arrogant facade finally shattered. Her hands trembled as she looked at the undeniable proof of her conspiracy to ruin my life and manipulate the family empire.
Garrett leaned in close, his voice cold and devoid of any familial affection. He told his mother that he had already sent copies of these documents to the FBI, the SEC, and the federal judge overseeing Douglas and Christopher’s criminal cases.
He explained that Evelyn was now officially under investigation for corporate espionage, racketeering, and conspiracy. Her accounts were frozen, her assets were seized, and she was facing the very real possibility of spending her final years in a federal penitentiary alongside her disgraced son.
Evelyn began to weep, dropping her pride and begging Garrett for mercy. She pleaded that she had built the Corbin empire from the ground up and that destroying her would tarnish the family name forever.
Garrett looked at her with absolute disgust. He told her that the family name was a curse she had created, and he was completely wiping the slate clean.
He handed her a single legal document and a gold pen. It was a binding agreement forcing Evelyn to permanently surrender her position as co-manager of the trust, waiving all rights to the Matriarch Clause, and accepting permanent exile to a remote, highly monitored medical facility in Switzerland.

If she signed it, Garrett would withhold the final piece of evidence needed to put her in a concrete cell. If she refused, he would personally testify against her in open court.
Utterly broken and stripped of all her power, Evelyn picked up the pen and signed her empire away.
