Chapter 9 - The Mother's Gift

Evelyn walked slowly toward the table, leaning heavily on her pearl-handled walking stick.

She looked at her triumphant son with a mixture of immense pride and profound sorrow.

She placed the thick manila envelope onto the table, sliding it directly in front of Garrett.

Evelyn explained that these were the original, unaltered founding documents of the family corporation.

She had hidden them from Douglas for years, knowing he would try to rewrite history to suit his greed.

Garrett opened the envelope and found legal clauses that allowed him to completely strip Douglas of his family trust.

Douglas and Gertrude would be left with absolutely nothing, forced to face the federal fraud charges on their own.

Evelyn turned to me, her eyes shining with unshed tears, and thanked me for saving her remaining family.

She admitted that she had been a coward for far too long, but watching me fight back had given her courage.

I hugged the frail woman, finally understanding the heavy burden she had carried in silence.

Over the next few weeks, the massive estate was completely purged of everyone loyal to Douglas and Gertrude.

Garrett’s physical recovery accelerated rapidly, fueled by his return to power and his sheer willpower.

He no longer needed his wheelchair at all, relying only on his cane for long walks through the gardens.

I officially took over the management of his household and his private medical care, earning every penny of my massive salary.

Christopher’s career was completely destroyed when the federal authorities raided ApexBio Solutions based on Garrett's evidence.

My ex-husband was currently facing heavy jail time for corporate espionage and wire fraud.

It felt incredibly satisfying to know that the man who had discarded me was now facing complete ruin.

Garrett and I spent our evenings sitting on the massive terrace, sharing stories about our pasts and our broken hearts.

The professional boundary between us began to blur into something much deeper, warmer, and undeniably romantic.

One evening, while watching the sunset, Garrett reached out and gently pulled me into his arms.

He kissed me softly, erasing the painful memories of my past and promising me a brilliant, secure future.

I finally had a man who truly respected me, a beautiful home, and a life I could be proud of.

Everything seemed absolutely perfect as we walked back inside to prepare for dinner.

That was when my personal cell phone buzzed violently in my pocket with a notification.
