Chapter 16 - The Secret Ledger

While the disastrous dinner party broke up early and Evelyn busied herself with saving face among her elite guests, I knew this was my only window of opportunity. Florence was distracted in the kitchen, furiously berating the staff for the evening's catastrophic failure.

I slipped away from the grand foyer and moved silently up the back staircase toward the East Wing. Garrett had disabled the security cameras in Evelyn’s corridor, giving me exactly fifteen minutes to find the hard evidence we needed to tie her directly to Florence and Christopher's fraud.

I picked the lock on Evelyn’s suite using a technique Garrett’s security chief had taught me. The room smelled heavily of lavender and expensive perfume. I immediately went for the antique mahogany writing desk near the balcony.

I carefully searched the drawers, finding nothing but stationary and mundane social calendars. My heart raced as the minutes ticked by. I remembered Evelyn’s reliance on old-school tactics—she wouldn't keep her darkest secrets on a digital device that could be easily hacked. She would keep them on paper.

I ran my fingers under the heavy desk and felt a small, hidden latch. I pressed it, and a false bottom dropped open, revealing a leather-bound ledger and a stack of old, yellowed letters.

I opened the letters, my breath catching in my throat as I read the handwriting. They were letters between Evelyn and Florence dating back over a decade.

The horrifying truth spilled across the pages. My marriage to Christopher hadn't been a tragic accident. Florence and Evelyn had orchestrated the entire relationship. Evelyn had wanted a ruthless, morally bankrupt protege to groom for a hostile takeover of ApexBio Solutions, and Florence had offered her son, Christopher.

But Christopher needed a compliant, isolated wife to maintain a respectable public image while he committed corporate crimes. Florence had practically selected me from my college campus, manipulating events to ensure Christopher and I met. They had engineered my isolation, my abuse, and my entire miserable life just to build Christopher’s resume for Evelyn’s corporate chessboard.

Tears of absolute rage spilled down my cheeks. I had blamed myself for years, thinking I was simply unlucky or foolish for falling in love with a monster. But I had been hunted. I had been a pawn in a game played by two evil, wealthy women.

I took out my phone and meticulously photographed every single page of the ledger and the letters. This wasn't just corporate fraud anymore; this was the systematic destruction of my life.

I carefully placed the documents back in the hidden compartment and locked the desk. I wiped my tears, feeling a cold, hollow sensation in my chest that quickly ignited into a raging inferno of vengeance. They were going to pay for every single tear I had shed over the last ten years.
