Chapter 7 - The Final Betrayal

I froze completely, my blood turning to ice as the cold barrel of a gun pressed against the back of my neck.
Dr. Vance stepped out of the shadows of the secret passage, his face twisted in a desperate, ugly grimace.
He whispered that Douglas had paid him a fortune to make sure Garrett never made it out of that bedroom alive.
The doctor admitted that he had followed us down the secret stairs, waiting for the perfect moment to execute his orders.
Garrett turned slowly, his eyes flashing with a deadly calm that seemed to unnerve the corrupt physician.
Garrett informed Dr. Vance that the security cameras in the dining room were hardwired to a private offshore server.
If the doctor pulled the trigger, the footage of the murder would automatically be sent to the FBI.
Dr. Vance hesitated, his eyes darting nervously toward the small security camera mounted in the corner of the dining room.
I used that single second of hesitation to drive my elbow fiercely into the doctor's ribs.
Dr. Vance gasped in pain and dropped the heavy pistol onto the hardwood floor with a loud clatter.
I kicked the weapon under a heavy antique buffet table, far out of his immediate reach.
Garrett swung his heavy wooden cane, striking the doctor squarely across the jaw with incredible force.
The corrupt doctor collapsed onto the floor, completely unconscious and no longer a threat to anyone.
I adjusted Garrett's tie, my hands shaking from the massive surge of pure adrenaline.
Garrett gave me a firm nod, confirming that he was absolutely ready to take his empire back.
I pushed the hidden door wide open, and we stepped confidently into the bright, sunlit hallway.
We walked straight toward the massive double doors of the executive boardroom.
I threw the doors open violently, making them crash against the walls like a clap of thunder.
Every single head in the room turned toward us in absolute, horrified disbelief.
Douglas dropped his gold fountain pen, his face draining of all color as he stared at his paralyzed brother.
Garrett stood tall and proud without his wheelchair, leaning casually on his cane like a reigning king.

Christopher locked eyes with me from across the mahogany table, and I could literally see his entire career crumbling.
Garrett took a slow, deliberate step into the room and smiled at his terrified brother.
