Chapter 18 - THE MORETTI DINNER

Years later, the Morettis invited us to a charity dinner.

Livia was twelve.

I asked if she wanted to go.

“Is Bianca there?”

“Yes.”

“Do I have to talk?”

“No.”

“Then okay.”

The Moretti-Rizzano commercial venture had performed reasonably well. No grand merger. No alliance throne. Two families owning a property together and arguing about parking revenue.

Bianca attended.

We nodded.

That was all.

Then Salvatore approached Livia.

“I owe you an apology.”

I disliked adults making children carry family guilt.

Livia handled it better.

“For what?”

“For hearing that there were problems and not asking enough questions.”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

Not forgiveness declaration.

Not hug.

Then Salvatore told me privately:

“I thought marriage would make business easier.”

“Did it?”

“No marriage. Business still works.”

May you like

He laughed.

The old Mafia world continued dying one practical example at a time.
