Chapter 8 - ROSALIE’S JOB
Rosalie offered to resign.
I refused the resignation automatically, then realized that was another form of control.
“Do you want to leave?”
She hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
Good.
We arranged an HR meeting away from the family.
Rosalie said she liked the estate work but no longer wanted a role where protecting Livia might be treated as overstepping.
Fair.
The household structure changed.
Domestic staff would no longer receive direct orders concerning children from nonparents or guests unless explicitly authorized.
Any conflict involving a child could be escalated directly to the estate director, security, or parent without passing through family hierarchy.
Rosalie was offered a new position as guest-services coordinator with clear authority boundaries, not as reward for heroism but because she had already been doing higher-level work and had strong performance reviews.
She accepted after negotiating salary.
Good.
No gratitude promotion with bad economics.
Then I asked her something difficult.
“Why did you tell Bianca no?”
She looked confused.
“Because she was going to cut Livia’s hair.”
“That simple?”
“Yes.”
I laughed once.
Old Mafia families can turn ordinary decency into courage because too many people are measuring rank first.
