Chapter 19 - LIVIA CHOOSES THE COMB

At sixteen, Livia wore Elena’s silver comb to a school formal.

Not wedding.

Not family event.

A school dance.

She asked me to help secure it.

My hands shook more than hers.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“You’re doing the face.”

“What face?”

“The dead-Mom face.”

Children become cruelly accurate.

I smiled.

“Sorry.”

Then she looked in the mirror.

One side of her hair had no visible evidence of the old shaving.

No scar.

No difference unless memory supplied it.

“Do you think Bianca would care?”

“Probably less now.”

“Good.”

Then:

“I’m not wearing it because of her.”

“I know.”

That was the victory.

The comb belonged to Elena.

Then Livia.

Not Bianca’s crime.
