Chapter 10 - The Hearing The courtroom was packed.

Reporters waited outside.
Grant sat beside Claire.
Across the room, Vivian appeared with her attorney.
She looked composed.
Almost victorious.
She described herself as the only adult who had provided structure for Lily.
She said Grant spoiled her.
She said he compensated for Lily's grief by refusing discipline.
Then Claire stood.
“Did you pour a second glass of water onto the floor after Lily had nearly finished cleaning the first?”
Vivian hesitated.
“I was demonstrating responsibility.”
“Responsibility for what?”
Vivian said nothing.
Claire continued.
“Did you remove a photograph of Lily's deceased mother?”
Vivian's face changed.
“That's irrelevant.”
“Did you throw away Lily's stuffed rabbit?”
Vivian looked toward Grant.
“He was filthy.”
“Twice?”
Silence.
Then Marisol testified.
She did not exaggerate.
She simply told the truth.
She described the wall.
The drawings.
The rabbit.
The warnings.
And Grant's failure to listen.
Vivian's attorney asked:
“Was Mr. Mercer a bad father?”
Marisol took a breath.
“No.”
Grant looked up.
“He loved Lily.”
A pause.
“But love isn't the same as being present.”
Grant lowered his eyes.
The judge listened.

And when the ruling came, Grant kept custody.
But the victory did not feel like a victory.
