The mansion became quieter.
But Grant discovered that silence could be cruel.
Every room reminded him of something he had missed.
A chair where Lily used to sit.
A drawing Vivian had thrown away.
A photograph that had vanished.
A toy hidden behind towels.
The foundation suspended its literacy campaign.
The company placed Grant on temporary leave.
Thomas, his closest friend, voted for the decision.
Grant didn't speak to him for three days.
Then he called.
“You still want the job?”
Thomas sighed.
“Which one?”
“Running the company.”
“Temporarily.”
Grant almost smiled.
“You hesitated.”
“So did you.”
They both laughed.
It wasn't forgiveness.
But it was a beginning.
Grant began therapy.
He changed Lily's routine.
He brought Marisol back full-time.
He met with her preschool teachers.
He learned which foods Lily hated.
Which songs she liked.
Which nightmares woke her.
Which stuffed animal belonged beside her pillow.
