Chapter 13 - The Hidden Box Months later, Grant discovered another box in the basement.

Inside were Lily's old drawings.

Dozens of them.

A house.

A family.

A woman beneath a red umbrella.

A little girl holding a gray rabbit.

And one drawing that made Grant stop breathing.

Three people stood beneath a yellow sun.

Lily.

Her mother.

And Grant.

But Vivian had been drawn outside the house.

Alone.

Grant stared at it.

He had never asked Lily how she saw the family.

Now he understood.

Children often spoke in pictures when adults made words too dangerous.

Grant placed the drawings into a new box.

He labeled it:

LILY — KEEP FOREVER.

Then he took the box upstairs.

Lily was coloring at the kitchen table.

He placed it beside her.

“What's this?”

“Your old pictures.”

She looked inside.

Her face lit up.

“Bunny!”

Grant smiled.

“Yeah.”

She pulled out the drawing of her mother.

Then looked at him.

“Mommy.”

May you like

Grant nodded.

“Always.”
