Chapter 11 - The Sovereign Dawn

By six o'clock in the morning, the rain over Rhode Island had cleared, giving way to a crisp, breathtaking autumn dawn. Pink and golden sunlight washed over the marble columns of Sterling Manor, reflecting off the damp lawns stretching toward the Atlantic Ocean.
Dozens of federal law enforcement vehicles and private security sedans sat lined along the estate's circular driveway, their lights flashing quietly against the damp stone walls.
Julian Vance and Arthur Sterling were led down the grand front steps in handcuffs, flanked by federal agents, their corporate careers and high-society standing permanently destroyed.
Inside the warm, sunlit breakfast parlor on the second floor, the atmosphere was quiet, peaceful, and bright.
Ethan sat at a long mahogany table, wearing a crisp white shirt with an open collar, drinking a fresh cup of dark coffee. Across from him sat Elena, wearing a soft grey wool sweater, her dark hair flowing naturally over her shoulders, her face looking rested and beautiful under the morning light.
Noah was sitting between them in a high chair, happily eating a plate of chocolate-chip pancakes, his face smeared with maple syrup.
Noah: "Daddy! Look! I made a pancake tower!"
Ethan smiled warmly, reaching over to wipe a drop of syrup from his son's cheek.
Ethan: "Just don't let it fall down, buddy."
Marcus stepped into the room, holding an encrypted satellite tablet, giving a respectful nod to both Ethan and Elena.
Marcus: "Boss. Federal authorities in Chicago and London have seized all assets associated with Arthur Sterling's firm. The patent portfolio is completely secure."
Ethan set his coffee cup down, looking at his chief of security.
Ethan: "And Julian?"
Marcus: "He's cooperating fully with federal prosecutors. He surrendered his entire share of the family trust to avoid a federal conspiracy charge."
Ethan nodded slowly, looking across the table at Elena.
Ethan: "Which means my late wife's thirty-percent share of the patent trust officially transfers to her legal heir."
Elena looked up, her brown eyes wide with surprise. "Ethan... I told you, I don't want the money."
May you like
Ethan reached across the table, taking her hand gently in his, his hazel eyes filled with a deep, unshakeable sincerity that made her heart skip a beat.
Ethan: "You didn't ask for it, Elena. But it belongs to you. Claire wanted you to have it... and so do I."
