Chapter 3 - The Velvet Cage

The private study on the third floor of Sterling Manor was a fortress of quiet, dark luxury. Towering bookshelves lined with leather-bound volumes reached up to a dark wood ceiling, while a grand fireplace cast flickering orange light over leather armchairs and a polished mahogany desk.
Dr. Aris, Ethan’s personal physician, finished placing a delicate, butterfly bandage over the small cut on Elena’s forehead.
Dr. Aris: "No concussion, Ethan. Just a minor surface laceration. She’s remarkably tough."
Elena sat on the edge of a leather sofa, wearing a warm cashmere sweater provided by the house staff over her uniform shirt. She was holding a warm cup of tea, her eyes tracking Noah, who was sitting on the rug near her feet, quietly playing with a set of wooden building blocks.
Ethan stood by the tall glass windows, looking out into the pouring rain that was now washing over the estate's private gardens. A heavy glass of scotch sat untouched on his desk.
Ethan: "Thank you, Doctor. Keep a full medical team on standby in the guest wing tonight."
Dr. Aris packed his medical bag, gave a polite nod to Elena, and quietly exited the study, closing the heavy oak door behind him.
The room fell into a quiet, heavy stillness. Ethan turned away from the window, walking over to the fireplace, his eyes fixed on Elena.
Ethan: "The cufflink you found... it was an exact duplicate of a set given to my inner circle three years ago. Only five people own them."
Elena set her teacup down on the saucer with a soft CLINK.
Elena: "Then whoever sent that man knew your schedule, knew where Noah would be standing, and had access to your family crest."
Ethan leaned against the mantelpiece, his gaze narrowing slightly.
Ethan: "You reacted before anyone else in that room, Elena. You saw the glass move before it even made a sound. Where did you learn to spot a threat like that?"
Elena’s hand tightened subtly around her teacup, her expressive brown eyes remaining remarkably calm.
Elena: "When you grow up working in high-end service, Mr. Vance, you learn to pay attention to details that wealthy people ignore. A unstable tray, a loose fixture... or a man standing on a balcony who doesn't belong."
Ethan studied her face for a long, silent moment. Her answer was logical, perfectly reasonable, yet there was a poise in her posture—a complete lack of fear in the presence of extreme wealth and power—that made him suspect there was far more to Elena Ross than a agency maid.
Noah looked up from his building blocks, holding up a wooden tower toward Elena.
Noah: "Look, Elena! I built a castle. It won't fall down."
Elena smiled warmly, dropping to her knees beside the little boy, her hand gently patting his brown curls.
Elena: "It’s a very strong castle, Noah. The strongest in the room."
A sharp knock sounded at the door. Marcus stepped into the study, holding a secure electronic tablet. His expression was grave.
Marcus: "Boss. We ran the fingerprints on the tattooed guy."
Ethan walked away from the fireplace, his tone dropping into a low, commanding register.
Ethan: "Who is he?"
Marcus swiped the screen, presenting a red-flagged military dossier.
Marcus: "His name is Victor Vance. He’s a former mercenary contractor out of Eastern Europe. But that's not the problem, Boss."
Ethan brow furrowed. "What is it?"
May you like
Marcus looked at Elena, then back at Ethan, lowering his voice to a whisper.
Marcus: "He didn't come in through the estate gates. He arrived three hours ago on a private helicopter registered to your brother’s holdings in Chicago."
