Chapter 4 - The Mirror's Edge

Ethan stood completely still in the center of the dark study. The orange light from the fireplace flickered across his sharp jawline, emphasizing the cold, lethal stillness that settled over his features.

Julian Vance. His younger brother. The man who managed the European distribution branches of the family's multinational tech conglomerate.

Noah looked up from his blocks, noticing his father's sudden change in posture, his bright blue eyes wide with innocent curiosity.

Noah: "Daddy? Is Uncle Julian coming to my party?"

Ethan looked down at his son, instantly forcing his rigid expression to soften into a warm, reassuring smile. He walked over, stooping down to ruffle Noah’s brown curls.

Ethan: "Not tonight, buddy. Uncle Julian is busy in Chicago. Why don't you go with Mrs. Gable to the playroom and see the big cake?"

Noah brightened up, clapping his hands together. "The cake with the chocolate mountain?"

Ethan: "The very one."

Ethan gestured to the head housekeeper waiting at the doorway. Mrs. Gable took Noah’s small hand, leading him gently down the wide carpeted hallway toward the private residential wing.

The moment the door closed behind his son, Ethan’s smile vanished completely. He turned back to Marcus, his hazel eyes like two shards of polished green ice.

Ethan: "Where is Julian right now?"

Marcus swiped through the data feeds on his tablet.

Marcus: "His private jet landed at Providence airport forty-five minutes ago. He’s currently in transit to the estate in a dark sedan. He should be arriving at the front gate in ten minutes."

Ethan picked up his untouched glass of scotch, swirling the dark amber liquid slowly.

Ethan: "He came to attend the party... or to collect the inheritance if the accident had worked."

Elena stood up from the sofa, smoothing her cashmere sweater. Her posture was erect, her tone calm and analytical.

Elena: "If he sent Victor to push that glass, he didn't expect you to survive the initial target strike. The cufflink was meant to frame someone else."

Ethan turned his head to look at her, genuinely surprised by her sharp tactical assessment.

Ethan: "You think he wanted to frame one of my other lieutenants?"

Elena stepped closer to the mahogany desk, pointing a slender finger at the cufflink resting on the blotter.

Elena: "The laser-etched photo on the back... it isn't just a picture of you, Mr. Vance. Look at the serial number beneath the image frame."

Ethan picked up the gold cufflink, holding it up to the desk lamp's warm light. Beneath the microscopic photo of his face was a tiny, engraved set of numbers: 004-B.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed sharply.

Ethan: "004-B belongs to my chief legal counsel, Arthur Sterling. The man who holds the master power of attorney over the Vance trust if I am incapacitated."

Elena met his gaze, her voice quiet and absolute.

Elena: "Julian didn't just want you dead. He wanted Arthur framed for your murder so he could claim sole control over the family's assets without a legal battle."

Ethan stared at the maid, the depth of her insight alarming him far more than his brother's betrayal.

Ethan: "You read serial codes under high stress, you analyze corporate inheritance structures in seconds... Who are you really, Elena?"

May you like

Elena didn't flinch. She met his piercing hazel eyes with unwavering confidence.

Elena: "Right now, Mr. Vance, I’m the only person in this house who doesn't have a reason to lie to you."
