Chapter 9 - The Shadow in the Library

The grand library on the second floor of Sterling Manor was quiet, dimly lit by the embers dying in the massive marble fireplace. Towering mahogany bookshelves held thousands of rare leather-bound volumes, casting deep shadows across the thick oriental rugs.

A hidden steel panel set behind a section of dark oak cabinetry stood slightly ajar, revealing a narrow, illuminated stairwell leading down into the estate's private subterranean server vaults.

Standing near the open panel was Arthur Sterling. At sixty-two, the distinguished lawyer looked immaculate in a tailored dark suit, his silver hair neatly combed back, his gold-rimmed reading glasses resting on his nose. He was typing rapidly into a military-grade encryption terminal connected directly to the wall outlet.

Arthur over terminal: "Bypass security protocol 04. Authorize full transfer of the Vance patent portfolio to the London holding firm."

A soft, cold voice echoed from the dark doorway of the library.

"The London holding firm doesn't have clearance, Arthur."

Arthur froze, his fingers hovering over the glowing keyboard. He slowly turned around, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses.

Ethan walked into the room, moving with silent, terrifying grace. Beside him walked Elena, holding a heavy tactical flashlight, her face a mask of absolute, calm determination.

Arthur let out a quiet, cultured sigh, shutting the terminal screen down with a quiet snap.

Arthur: "I must admit, Ethan... I didn't expect the catering maid to prove quite so troublesome. Julian was supposed to handle the narrative."

Ethan stopped ten feet away, his broad frame blocking the library exit entirely.

Ethan: "You used my brother, you hired an assassin to collapse three hundred pounds of glass onto my five-year-old son, and you tried to steal my family's legacy."

Arthur leaned back against the mahogany desk, reaching inside his jacket with a smooth, unhurried motion.

Arthur: "Your family's legacy was built on my legal genius, Ethan! Your father promised me thirty percent of the patent rights twenty years ago, but when he died, you locked the entire portfolio inside a private trust for Noah!"

Arthur pulled a sleek, silenced semi-automatic pistol from his jacket, aiming it directly at Ethan’s chest.

Arthur: "I spent thirty years building this empire for the Vance family. I will not be pushed aside for a five-year-old boy."

Elena didn't hesitate. She stepped slightly in front of Ethan, her large brown eyes fixed on the lawyer, her voice cutting through the quiet room like cold iron.

Elena: "You're holding the gun with a loose wrist, Arthur. You've never fired a weapon in your life."

Arthur’s hand shook slightly, his finger tightening against the trigger.

Arthur: "Stay back, girl! I will shoot him!"

From the shadows behind the towering bookshelf near Arthur’s left shoulder, a small voice echoed through the quiet room.

Noah: "Daddy?"
