Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Chicago

The rain outside the manor beat down with furious intensity, rattling the high stained-glass windows of the grand entrance hall.

Julian hung from Ethan’s iron grip, his feet barely touching the marble floor, his eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated terror as his brother’s shadow swallowed him whole.

Julian: "It wasn't... it wasn't about Noah! I swear to you on our mother's grave, Ethan! The target was never Noah!"

Ethan tightened his grip, his knuckles turning white against the grey fabric of Julian’s tailored suit jacket.

Ethan: "The glass pyramid was set directly above his play area, Julian! If Elena hadn't thrown her body over him, my five-year-old son would be dead!"

Julian choked back a sob, his hands frantically clawing at Ethan’s wrist.

Julian: "The glass was meant to fall twenty minutes earlier! When you were scheduled to make the birthday toast standing at the podium! Victor mistimed the trigger mechanism... he didn't realize the boy had walked over there!"

Ethan’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently along his cheek. He lowered Julian slightly, though he didn't release his hold.

Ethan: "Who paid you to put Victor on that plane, Julian?"

Julian looked around the hall frantically, as if expecting snipers to emerge from the upper balconies, his voice dropping into a desperate, ragged whisper.

Julian: "The Syndicate in Chicago... the old shareholders from the 2018 buyout. They found out about the private vault in Zurich, Ethan! They know about the secondary registry!"

Elena, standing near the bottom of the marble stairs, froze instantly upon hearing those words. Her expressive brown eyes narrowed, a sudden, subtle shift passing over her features that Ethan caught out of the corner of his eye.

Ethan didn't look back at Elena, but his grip on Julian remained tight.

Ethan: "What secondary registry?"

Julian gasped for air, his face turning red under the pressure.

Julian: "The registry your late wife hid before she died! The one listing the biological heirs to the Vance tech patents! They know Noah isn't the only child listed on the charter!"

A heavy, suffocating silence gripped the grand hall.

Ethan stared at his brother, a rare flicker of genuine, deep shock piercing his lethal composure.

Ethan’s wife, Claire, had died four years ago in a sudden, tragic boat accident off the coast of Maine. For four years, Ethan had believed he knew every secret of his late wife's life.

Ethan slowly released his grip, letting Julian slump to the marble floor, coughing and catching his breath.

Ethan stood over him, his voice dropping into a tone that chilled the air in the room.

Ethan: "Claire died four years ago. What are you talking about?"

Julian looked up from the floor, wiping a tear from his eye, a bitter, pathetic laugh escaping his lips.

Julian: "You really didn't know, did you? Claire didn't die in an accident, Ethan. She fled... because she discovered what your father built thirty years ago."

Julian pointed a trembling finger toward Elena, who stood perfectly still in the warm ambient light of the entrance hall.

Julian: "Ask her, Ethan! Ask your hero maid why her name matches the primary trust record in Chicago!"
