Chapter 13 - The Velvet Horizon

The sun began to set over Boston Harbor, painting the sky in deep shades of crimson, violet, and liquid gold. The reflections bounced off the glass skyscrapers, bathing the executive office in a warm, romantic glow.

Noah had fallen asleep on the plush leather sofa, clutching his toy boat tightly against his chest, his brown curls messy over his forehead.

Ethan and Elena stood side by side near the tall glass window, looking out over the harbor as the city lights began to flicker to life one by one.

Elena rested her head gently against Ethan’s broad shoulder, her hand wrapped securely in his. The long, terrifying months of living in hiding, of fighting secret corporate wars, felt like a distant, faded nightmare.

Elena: "Claire would be so happy to see Noah like this, Ethan. Safe... loved... happy."

Ethan turned his head, kissing the top of her dark hair, his voice low and deep.

Ethan: "Claire brought you back into our lives, Elena. She knew you were the only one who could save us."

A quiet knock sounded at the door. Marcus stepped into the room, holding a single dark leather folder stamped with a silver seal.

Marcus looked unusually tense, his sharp eyes flicking between Ethan and Elena before he spoke in a low, measured tone.

Marcus: "Boss... sorry to disturb you. The audit team in Chicago just completed the final sweep of Arthur Sterling's private estate in the Bahamas."

Ethan turned around, keeping his arm comfortably wrapped around Elena’s waist.

Ethan: "Did they find secondary accounts?"

Marcus opened the folder, presenting a high-resolution satellite photograph of an underground facility built beneath a private island in the Caribbean.

Marcus: "No, Boss. They found an old maritime manifest from 2018... signed by your late father."

Ethan brow furrowed slightly. "My father died in 2015, Marcus."

May you like

Marcus looked Ethan directly in the eye, his voice dropping into a register that made the quiet room feel instantly cold.

Marcus: "That's what the public records state, Boss. But according to these customs logs... your father wasn't on that plane that crashed in 2015. He’s been living on that island for eleven years."
