Chapter 7 - The Unspoken Bond

The quiet in the entrance hall was absolute. Outside, the thunder rolled across the Rhode Island coastline, sending low vibrations through the thick stone walls of Sterling Manor.

Ethan turned his broad body around slowly, his piercing hazel eyes locking onto Elena with a intensity that could burn through steel.

Ethan: "Elena."

Elena didn't run. She didn't flinch. She stood tall on the marble floor, her arms resting naturally by her sides, her large brown eyes reflecting the warm golden light of the chandelier overhead.

Elena: "He’s telling half a truth, Mr. Vance."

Ethan walked over to her, stopping two feet away. The authority he radiated was vast, overwhelming, but beneath it was a raw, exposed edge of a man whose entire reality was shifting beneath his feet.

Ethan: "Explain it to me. Now."

Elena reached up, slowly pulling a small silver chain from beneath the collar of her white uniform shirt. Attached to the chain was a tiny, delicate key made of brushed platinum, engraved with a single, elegant letter: C.

Elena: "My full name is Elena Ross-Vance. I am Claire’s younger sister."

Ethan’s eyes widened sharply. The resemblance—the deep brown eyes, the delicate jawline, the effortless grace—instantly clicked into place in his mind like a missing puzzle piece.

Ethan: "Claire... never mentioned a sister."

Elena let out a quiet, soft breath, her gaze dropping to the silver key in her hand before returning to his face.

Elena: "Because our father hid me when I was six years old. When the corporate war broke out in 2002, he separated us to protect the family bloodline. Claire went to live with our aunt in Boston... and I was raised under a false identity in Chicago."

Julian scrambled up from the floor, clutching his throat, pointing wildly at her.

Julian: "See?! She’s an insider! She infiltrated your security detail to claim the patent trust!"

Elena turned her head, her gaze sweeping over Julian with a cold, absolute disgust that made the cowardly man step back.

Elena: "I didn't come here for money, Julian. I came here because Claire sent me a letter three days before she died, warning me that someone inside the Vance family was planning to eliminate Noah."

She looked back at Ethan, her eyes brimming with a raw, fierce sincerity.

Elena: "I took a job with the catering agency three months ago just to get close enough to protect your son. I didn't care about the patents, Ethan. I only cared about keeping Claire’s baby safe."

Ethan stared at her—at his late wife's sister—the woman who had thrown her own body beneath three hundred pounds of falling glass to shield his son from an assassin's trap.

Ethan reached out, taking the delicate platinum key from her palm, his thumb brushing over the engraved letter C.

Ethan: "You’re Noah’s aunt."

Elena gave a faint, quiet nod, tears sparkling in her eyes.

Elena: "I’m his aunt, Ethan. And I would die before I let anyone hurt him."
