Chapter 8 - The Iron Vault

The subterranean holding room beneath Sterling Manor was a cold, windowless chamber built from reinforced concrete and heavy steel beams. Industrial fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting a harsh, sterile glow over the stone floor.

Victor Vance—the tattooed assassin—sat strapped to a heavy steel chair in the center of the room, his arms bound with heavy tactical restraints. His face was bruised, his nose broken from his earlier brief encounter with Ethan.

Marcus stood beside the door, holding a pair of heavy leather gloves, while two armed security officers kept their weapons trained on the prisoner.

The heavy steel door hissed open. Ethan stepped into the cold room, followed closely by Elena. He had put on a fresh black jacket, his posture rigid, his hazel eyes completely devoid of mercy.

Ethan walked over, stopping directly in front of the tied-up assassin.

Ethan: "You have thirty seconds to tell me who authorized the secondary strike team in Chicago."

Victor let out a spitting, bloody laugh, looking up with cold defiance.

Victor: "You're late, Vance. The contract was finalized three hours ago. Even if you kill me, the secondary team is already moving on the Chicago servers."

Elena stepped forward, her voice calm, icy, and remarkably composed as she looked at the prisoner.

Elena: "The Chicago servers don't hold the master encryption key, Victor."

Victor’s defiant smile faltered slightly as he looked at the young woman standing beside the billionaire.

Elena reached into her pocket, pulling out her phone and displaying a secure digital ledger screen.

Elena: "My sister Claire moved the master patent registry out of Chicago four years ago. She placed it inside a dark server node located right here... beneath this estate."

Victor’s eyes widened in genuine, unexpected shock. "That's impossible... the Chicago syndicate verified the IP address!"

Ethan looked at Elena, his brow furrowing slightly, realizing that she was running a brilliant, high-stakes tactical bluff.

Elena stepped closer to the prisoner, holding her phone inches from his face.

Elena: "You were sent here as a distraction, Victor. Julian was meant to take the fall for the ballroom collapse, while the real contractor accessed the subterranean vault from inside the house."

Victor swallowed hard, his confidence completely shattering as he realized he had been used as a disposable pawn by his employers.

Victor: "Arthur... Arthur Sterling promised me two million dollars..."

Ethan’s eyes snapped shut for a fraction of a second as the final piece of the puzzle slammed into place.

Arthur Sterling. His trusted chief legal counsel. The man who was supposed to be in London.

Ethan leaned down, grabbing Victor by his collar, his voice dropping into an absolute, lethal whisper.

Ethan: "Where is Arthur right now?"

May you like

Victor’s voice trembled with sudden, genuine panic.

Victor: "He’s inside the house, Vance! He arrived twenty minutes ago through the service tunnels!"
