Chapter 11 - WHAT LOVE WASN'T The second charge detonated twelve minutes later.

The third failed.

Bomb technicians dismantled it beneath the foundation.

Adrian survived.

But surviving did not make him innocent.

He had saved my life.

He had also destroyed it.

I confronted him in the hospital.

“You knew Grace was your daughter.”

“Yes.”

“You let her believe you were her uncle.”

“My mother said it was safer.”

“For whom?”

He looked away.

I wanted to hate him.

It would have been easier.

Instead, I felt something worse.

Pity.

He had spent his entire life confusing obedience with love.

Possession with protection.

Fear with loyalty.

Then he told me Rebecca Sloan was alive.

“Who is she?”

He swallowed.

“Caroline Vale.”

Thomas Vale's wife.

The woman who had sat at our dinner table the night Adrian attacked me.

The woman who had claimed she saw nothing.

Before he could explain further, the hospital alarm sounded.

Monica Shaw had escaped.

She entered disguised as a nurse.

She raised a gun toward Adrian.

I pushed his wheelchair aside.

The bullet struck the wall.

Monica disappeared into the smoke.

Adrian grabbed my wrist.

“Rebecca is Caroline.”

Then he whispered:

“She has the final recording.”
