Chapter 16 - THE NIGHT LYDIA DISAPPEARED Lydia confronted Adrian.

Not in anger.

Not with screaming.

With questions.

“You hit Claire.”

“Yes.”

“You abandoned me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Grace was alive.”

Silence.

“You heard me begging.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Lydia's voice broke.

“Then why didn't you help me?”

He finally answered.

“Because I was afraid of my mother.”

Lydia stared at him.

“That isn't an excuse.”

“I know.”

He told the entire story.

Eleanor ordered him to abandon Lydia.

Thomas Vale transported her across state lines.

Adrian knew where she was.

He knew Grace was alive.

He chose his family.

That choice destroyed everything.

Thomas later confessed.

My father's death was officially classified as homicide.

Sixteen years after the accident.

I visited his grave.

I remembered the last argument we'd had.

I had been nineteen.

Angry.

Immature.

I had stormed away believing I would have another chance to tell him I loved him.

Then Caroline gave me a letter.

My father's handwriting.

COURAGE IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF FEAR. IT IS THE DECISION THAT SOMETHING ELSE MATTERS MORE.

Beneath the message was an architectural drawing.

A community center.

Emergency apartments.

Legal support.

Childcare.

A safe place for families escaping violence.

He had named it:

THE BENNETT HOUSE.

I finally understood what he had wanted me to do.

Not revenge.

Construction.

Then Reyes called.

“Eleanor escaped.”

My blood went cold.

May you like

“And the guard assigned to her transport?”

“Dead.”
