Chapter 22 - THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH The woman's name was Evelyn Hart.

According to the Caldwell records, she had been a structural consultant.

According to public records, she had died sixteen years ago.

According to the photograph in my father's secret archive, she had been alive beside him shortly before his death.

That contradiction changed everything.

We drove north under a gray morning sky.

The coastline stretched beside us.

Fog rolled over the cliffs like smoke.

Neither of us spoke much.

I kept looking at my father's handwriting.

The words seemed to follow me.

SHE KNOWS WHY I DIED.

We reached the address at noon.

It was an abandoned lighthouse.

The door was unlocked.

Inside, the walls were covered with photographs.

My father.

Lydia.

Eleanor.

Halcyon Tower.

Caldwell properties.

And me.

Some photographs were decades old.

Others had been taken only weeks earlier.

“This isn't Eleanor,” Reyes whispered.

I turned.

“What?”

“She documented Eleanor's operation.”

“So who was watching whom?”

A floorboard creaked above us.

We drew our weapons.

A shadow moved across the second-floor window.

Reyes shouted.

“Sheriff's Department! Come out!”

Silence.

Then a woman's voice answered.

“You're late.”

A door opened.

An elderly woman stepped into the light.

Gray hair.

Sharp eyes.

A scar across her jaw.

I knew immediately.

Evelyn Hart.

She looked at me for a long time.

“You have Samuel's eyes.”

My throat tightened.

“You knew my father.”

“I knew the man he was before the Caldwells destroyed his life.”

“Why did you let me believe he died in an accident?”

Her expression softened.

“Because your father asked me to.”

“Why?”

She pointed toward the wall.

At the center was a photograph of Eleanor.

Beside it was another photograph.

A baby.

My baby picture.

I stared at it.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn didn't answer.

Instead, she said:

“Your father wasn't investigating the Caldwells because of their buildings.”

I felt the room grow colder.

“Then why?”

“Because he discovered they were hiding something much older.”

“What?”

May you like

She looked toward the ocean.

“A network.”
