Chapter 26 - THE ARCHITECT The woman on the screen called herself Mara.

She knew everything.
The condo.
The Caldwell family.
Lydia.
Grace.
My father.
Even the plate.
“You've been watching me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father asked me to.”
My breath caught.
“He knew you?”
“He trusted me.”
“Then why didn't you help him?”
Her smile faded.
“Because I was afraid.”
The answer was almost too familiar.
Everyone had been afraid.
Fear had been the currency of the Caldwell empire.
Mara continued.
“Your father discovered Meridian. But he didn't understand its full purpose.”
“What purpose?”
“Control.”
She explained that Meridian had spent decades buying distressed properties.
Buildings.
Land.
Businesses.
Then engineering failures would be manufactured or ignored.
People would lose homes.
Insurance companies would pay.
Banks would profit.
Developers would acquire the ruins.
The system fed itself.
But my father had discovered a way to destroy it.
Transparency.
Public ownership.
Community control.
The Bennett House was the first prototype.
Not just a shelter.
A model for breaking the cycle.
“You finished what he started,” Mara said.
“So why are you still watching me?”
“Because the system noticed.”
The screen went black.
Then a final message appeared.
YOU HAVE ONE YEAR.
Reyes stared at me.
“One year until what?”
I didn't know.
But the next morning, something arrived at my condo.
A legal document.
A property acquisition notice.
The buyer was anonymous.
May you like
The property?
The Bennett House.
