Chapter 6 - THE SILVER MINE The mine was surrounded before sunrise.

Federal agents.
Local tactical teams.
Emergency medical crews.
The mountains were black against a pale winter sky.
I studied the original mine plans.
“There.”
Reyes looked at me.
“What?”
“A ventilation shaft.”
“You think they're using it?”
“They need air.”
The tactical team entered.
Minutes became hours.
Then the radio crackled.
“Child located.”
I closed my eyes.
Grace was alive.
They found her beside a waterproof evidence case.
Julian had abandoned both.
The case contained hundreds of documents.
Property transfers.
Bank records.
Inspection reports.
Audio files.
Fourteen buildings.
Six residential towers.
Three hospitals.
Two schools.
A courthouse.
A sports arena.
And one building that made my blood run cold.
HALCYON TOWER.
My father's name appeared repeatedly.
SAMUEL BENNETT.
My father.
I had spent sixteen years believing he died in a traffic accident.
The documents told a different story.
He had discovered the falsified steel reports.
He refused to sign.
An audio recording played.
My father's voice:
“I will not approve this.”
Charles Caldwell answered.
“You already did.”
“That's not my signature.”
“It will be.”
Three days later, my father was dead.
Grace was brought to me.
She was trembling.
I knelt.
“You are safe now.”
She looked at me.
“Grandmother said you wanted our house.”
“No.”
“She said you were greedy.”
I shook my head.
“I wanted the truth.”
Grace studied me for a long moment.
Then she handed me a small recorder.
“Uncle Julian told me to give you this.”
His voice emerged.
“Charles ordered Lydia's death.”
My blood went cold.
“He ordered Samuel Bennett's death.”
Then another voice appeared.
Cold.
Calm.
Familiar.
Eleanor.
“Finish the recording, Julian.”
The file ended.
For the first time, I understood.
The Caldwell family wasn't a family.
May you like
It was an empire.
And Eleanor was its queen.
