Chapter 19 - WHAT WE BUILT FROM THE ASHES The Caldwell assets were seized.

A compensation fund was created for the families harmed by their construction fraud.
Halcyon Tower was safely dismantled.
Several other buildings were repaired.
Lydia regained legal custody of Grace.
The transition was difficult.
Grace had loved Eleanor.
Children don't stop loving someone simply because adults reveal terrible truths.
Lydia never forced her daughter to hate anyone.
She gave her time.
Maya divorced Julian.
She and her children moved into an apartment near Lydia.
Caroline finally reclaimed her real identity.
Rebecca Sloan no longer needed to hide.
And I returned to my father's drawing.
The Bennett House.
We built it on land seized from the Caldwell companies.
It contained emergency apartments.
Legal services.
Childcare.
Job training.
Counseling rooms.
And, most importantly, doors that locked from the inside.
On opening day, hundreds of people gathered outside.
Maya became the family-services director.
Lydia led the legal advocacy program.
I supervised construction.
Grace stood beside me holding the ribbon.
“Are all these people our family?”
Lydia smiled.
“Some of them.”
Grace frowned.
“How do we know which ones?”
I knelt beside her.
“Family isn't the group that demands everything from you.”
I paused.
“Family is the group that stands beside you when saying no costs something.”
Grace smiled.
Then we cut the ribbon.
That night, I returned to my condo.
For the first time, the rooms felt completely mine.
No Adrian.
No Caldwell family.
No surveillance.
No hidden compartments.
Only the sound of the bay beyond the windows.
I walked into the kitchen.
The pantry wall had been repaired.
The hidden chamber was gone.
The scars remained only in memory.
Then I noticed something outside my front door.
May you like
A small package.
No return address.
