Chapter 9 - THE DEED The original condo deed was locked inside a bank vault.

Eleanor knew that.
But she didn't need the original.
She needed me to sign a transfer.
Then she would use my engineering credentials to validate Halcyon Tower's safety documents.
She needed my name more than she needed my home.
“The Caldwell family built an empire,” she said.
“You built a crime scene.”
Her smile disappeared.
She placed a document on the table.
“Sign.”
I looked at the legal description.
Something was wrong.
The unit number was correct.
The parcel number wasn't.
I looked at Monica.
Then Eleanor.
Then Grace.
I understood.
The document had been prepared in a hurry.
I reached for the pen.
Then stopped.
“This isn't my condo.”
Monica glanced down.
That half-second was enough.
I slammed the pen into her wrist.
The gun moved.
Lydia pulled Grace down.
A shot shattered the window.
Then the doors exploded inward.
Federal agents flooded the building.
Monica was arrested.
Lydia and Grace were pulled to safety.
Eleanor disappeared through a maintenance tunnel.
But she left something behind.
A handgun.
Ballistics later revealed that it had been connected to a murder sixteen years earlier.
My father's driver.
The weapon had been preserved by Eleanor for years.
Not as evidence.
As a trophy.

That night, I finally understood how long she had been planning.
And how many people had died protecting her secrets.
