Chapter 15 - THE HOME THEY COULD NEVER TAKE The fraudulent loan collapsed.

The bank paid the legal costs.

The condo remained mine.

I changed every lock.

Replaced the security system.

Removed Adrian's belongings.

Then Lydia came to see me.

She carried a stack of letters.

“I found these.”

The first one was dated three days before my wedding.

CLAIRE, ADRIAN CALDWELL DOES NOT LOVE YOU. HE WAS SENT TO ACQUIRE YOUR PROPERTY. DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING. DO NOT CONFRONT HIM ALONE.

I stared at the handwriting.

Someone had intercepted the letter.

“Who wrote it?”

“Rebecca.”

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

My entire marriage had been built around a truth I had never been allowed to see.

That evening, Adrian accepted a plea agreement.

He agreed to testify against Eleanor.

When we met in court, he looked smaller.

Older.

Human.

“I did love you,” he said.

I believed that he believed it.

And that was the tragedy.

He had confused love with possession.

He had been taught that if someone belonged to you, you could control them.

I leaned toward him.

“Love doesn't make you afraid to say no.”

He lowered his head.

May you like

“I know.”

It was the first honest thing he had ever said to me.
