Chapter 23 - THE NETWORK Evelyn called it the Meridian Network.

The Caldwells were only one branch.

Developers.

Bankers.

Lawyers.

Officials.

Inspectors.

Politicians.

People who moved money and power through legitimate institutions while burying the consequences beneath them.

My father had discovered the network accidentally.

Then he followed it.

And it followed him.

“The Caldwell family didn't create Meridian,” Evelyn said.

“They inherited it.”

“From whom?”

She looked at me.

“People who are still alive.”

Reyes stepped forward.

“Names.”

Evelyn smiled bitterly.

“You're still thinking like a police officer.”

“And you're still refusing to answer questions.”

“Because names get people killed.”

She walked toward a locked cabinet.

Inside were dozens of files.

She handed one to me.

The label made my stomach drop.

BENNETT — CLAIRE.

I opened it.

There were records from before I met Adrian.

Before I graduated.

Before I even knew the Caldwell name.

My father had been monitoring threats against me.

He had known the Caldwells might approach me.

He had tried to protect me.

Then I found something worse.

A photograph of Adrian as a teenager.

Standing beside Eleanor.

And beside them—

my father.

My knees weakened.

“Why was Adrian with him?”

Evelyn answered quietly.

“Because Samuel tried to save Adrian too.”

Reyes stared at her.

“Save him from what?”

“His mother.”

The pieces shifted again.

Adrian had not simply been Eleanor's weapon.

He had once been a potential witness.

A frightened boy.

A son raised inside a system he didn't understand.

But at some point, he had chosen obedience.

And that choice had consequences.

I closed the file.

“Where is the original Meridian ledger?”

Evelyn's expression changed.

“You already have it.”

“What?”

May you like

She pointed at my father's architectural drawing.

“The Bennett House was never just a community center.”
